The Teaching
of
the Way of Sudden Awakening

"A special transmission outside the scriptures,

not founded upon words and letters;

by pointing directly to one’s Mind

it lets one see its own True Nature

and thus attain Buddhahood."

Bodhidharma

Original Zen - the History

The Way of Sudden Awakening has its roots in ancient China 1500 years ago where Mahayana Buddhism mingled with non-dual Taoism such as is found in the Tao Te Ching. What slowly emerged from this marriage is sometimes termed Original Zen or the early Ch’an Buddhist School of Immediate Enlightenment. This Way enabled ordinary people to suddenly Awaken to the True Nature of mind or the Buddha-nature without elaborate methodologies, protracted practices, asceticism, rituals or gurus.

Although history has lost the accounts of many of the thousands who were Enlightened by this direct approach, some records from the dawn of the Way of Sudden Awakening survived to this day. Such records as those of Bodhidharma, Seng Ts’an (Hsin Hsin Ming), Hui-neng, Ma-tsu, Huai-hai, Huang-po, Lin-chi as well as partial fragments of the teachings of dozens of others, all attest to the simplicity and efficacy of the Way of Sudden Awakening.

Sometimes called by names such as Original Zen, the Inner Light School of Ch’an, Ekayana (the One Vehicle), the Buddha Eye School, the Way of Clear Seeing or the Gate of Immediate Enlightenment, the Way of Sudden Awakening has appeared and re-appeared throughout history helping human beings actualize their full potential in the most direct manner possible

Re-appearing in Japan in the 17th Century with the teaching of Bankei, the Way of Sudden Awakening slowly spread its liberating message westward until reaching America. Since this Way utilizes only a person’s inborn Awareness, natural insight and mindfulness, and innate wisdom, it is not limited or confined to any culture or time period - hence it is as alive today as it was in its beginnings.
